Collaborating to Address Poverty

On February 21, the VISTA team traveled 2.5 hours to Allegheny College to meet up with the closest VISTA project, Lake Effect Leaders.  This VISTA program places anywhere from 15-30 individuals per year in nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and schools to collaboratively address issues related to poverty. Since the project’s inception in 2003, they have placed more than 200 members in more than 85 community organizations. Talk about getting things done!

We’d like to thank Lake Effect Leaders for hosting us and for inviting us to participate in future professional training workshops. We had a great time at Allegheny College engaging with other VISTAs who are doing big things. To network with other volunteers and discover the impact they are making in communities across northern Pennsylvania was truly inspiring.

The Lake Effect Leaders VISTA project serves as a model for Headwaters as we discuss the future expansion of our VISTA program. We hope to follow in their footsteps, acting as an umbrella organization for community organizations in the HWCT impact area who want to host a VISTA. Imagine all that can happen in the Headwaters region if we unite to host VISTAs and fight poverty with passion!
