I’m Hooked! (On Headwaters)

On Friday, June 2 Headwaters held their 3rd Annual Hooked on Headwaters Fly Fishing Challenge at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. It was my second time as a volunteer for the event, and you can tell by the picture I had a blast!

I made the mistake of wearing my brand-new Nikes to the event, unaware I’d be spending most the day on the river as a controller. (My duties last year consisted of watching afar while squealing at the fish and off-river tasks like set up and distributing water to the thirsty anglers.) This year, Steve Skvarka was nice enough to save my new shoes and lend me his boots and waders for the day. I may have looked like a marsupial, but I was a dry one! And yes, there was still plenty of squealing at the fish.

I especially enjoyed working with the anglers. Their knowledge was abundant as they taught me about casting, flies and various techniques. Between sessions on the river, we discussed their backgrounds over ice cold waters. (Then later, during happy hour, over beers!) It was wonderful to see such talented anglers from the area as well as special guests from the USA Youth Fly Fishing team from Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.

All in all, “working” this fundraiser feels much more like play. I encourage everyone to get involved in the 4th Annual Hooked ok Headwaters Fly Fishing Challenge next year!
