Keeping engaged in local events.
It’s Betty again. Gary and I are still finding plenty to do on the weekends. Two weeks ago we went to the PA Wilds Arts Fest at the Elk Country Visitor Center and last Saturday we went to the Kane Arts Festival and the Smoke on the Mountain BBQ competition in Kersey. All three were great events and we particularly had a good time at the BBQ competition because my fellow Leadership Elk County classmate, Mike Herzing, was a member of the Smoke ‘Em If You’ve Got ‘Em team and they won first place for their brisket and they also won the overall trophy.
Another favorite activity of ours is going to Farmers Markets. Saturday, we stopped at the St Marys Farmers Market and we like to check out the Farmers Markets in Kersey (Thursdays), Ridgway (Tuesdays) and Johnsonburg (Wednesdays), when we can. As a backup, we also shop at Rich’s Farm Market in Ridgway and Forster Farm’s honor system stand on the Johnsonburg Road. I guess you can tell we like fresh produce and other local products.
Last Friday, we even participated in an event. We helped wrap and bag beef sandwiches sold by the St Marys Rotary Club. The Rotary started the beef sale years ago at the Hometown Festival and has been at its current home, at the Project Gift location, for 6 years. Some of the members started cooking and setting up the day before and they really have the whole operation down to a science including drive-thru pick up. It was a real community effort with several businesses donating supplies and the Rotary members and other volunteers having fun working together, as well as getting to eat great sandwiches.
So now that it’s finally summer, get out there and enjoy the markets, festivals and community events. Get involved and have fun!
